Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Claim Numerous Deaths in Recent Border Fighting
Fresh fighting erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday morning, with both parties blaming the opposing side of starting lethal confrontations.
Pakistan's armed forces announced that its troops had eliminated "fifteen to twenty Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Afghan authorities spokesman said that 12 non-combatants had been killed and over a hundred injured by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that several military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the alleged fatalities could be verified by third parties.
Hostilities between the neighbors has flared since blasts rocked Afghanistan recently, which Kabul attributed on Pakistan. The Taliban reject allegations that it is harboring armed groups aiming at Pakistan.
Online Platforms and Military Engagements
The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to convince the public that their faction is causing greater losses.
The most recent clashes follow severe cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Afghan forces asserted to have eliminated fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan reported it killed 200 "militants and affiliated insurgents". The claimed casualty figures announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.
Several days of fragile peace that had lasted since the recent days were shattered on Wednesday morning.
Local Reports and Consequences
Videos allegedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been circulated online and on messaging groups, including footage claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from night vision cameras purporting to be of check posts destroyed. These videos have not been verified.
A informant in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that clashes erupted at around 04:00 local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, reported that "intense clashes continued for almost several hours".
"We observed drones and fighter planes soaring over us, some of our relatives are injured," they said.
A doctor in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak reported that he tallied "seven fatalities and 36 injured transported to the medical center", including males, females and children.
The circumstances were "tense" and additional victims were being transferred to hospital, he noted.
Evacuations and Global Reactions
A local authority figure in the area announced that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since last night due to the heavy clashes". He said they were on "high alert" after a several Taliban posts were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the remains of 2 armed forces members.
In a separate overnight clash on the western frontier, the Pakistani military claimed that 25 to 30 militant and Pakistani Taliban fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have prompted appeals for de-escalation from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could step in to facilitate a ceasefire.
On that day, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by accounts of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the clashes.
"I urge everyone involved to exercise the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he wrote.
Long-Standing Disputes
Islamabad has long alleged the Taliban authorities of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to function from their territory and battle against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to impose a strict Islamic-led system of governance.
The Afghan Taliban government has always rejected these allegations.
