James Comey was formally accused shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to move forward against him.
Court Developments
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald told the magistrate they intended to present multiple motions to throw out the proceedings before a court case, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to handle the case.
James Comey's proceedings was first managed by Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Historical Information
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
While in office, James Comey caused a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
Prosecutors allege James Comey provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to leak to news outlets data about the government examinations.
Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Public Statements
In a video James Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was innocent and alleged the former president of acting like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Thus initiate a court case."
The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump published on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and additional individuals.
