Student Society Future Leader Removed Following Conservative Activist Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.
Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response categorically refuted that any person appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on a related program podcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in spring.
